Flag out of play, Cinderella’s Castle may now be armed, Disney getting very social, and Rock and Roll Anticipation.Hello and welcome to the July 15th edition of “Guest Room” on ENN, the Ears News Network, bringing you Disney news you won’t believe…..and probably shouldn’t. I’m your host, Parker Byrd.
|Earlier this month, and following the lead of several businesses across the nation, Disney removed a confederate flag from a display of American related flags. The display hangs above the hallways leading into the theatre at the American Adventure Attraction in EPCOT at the Walt Disney World Resort. While the confederate flag has always been controversial for some, it received renewed backlash in light of the horrific shootings that took place in June in Charleston, South Carolina. This backlash was a result of a Facebook picture emerging showing the shooter holding the Confederate Battle Flag.
Now, the flag which hung at American Adventure was not the same flag. It was instead the last official flag of the Confederate States of America, although the confederate battle flag did appear in a quadrant of that flag.
Reactions to the removal by Disney have been mixed. Loretta Walsh, a high school history teacher from Amory, Mississippi said “While I am sensitive to the current wave of public opinion, I find it highly disappointing and disturbing that Disney would take this step. The American Adventure is supposed to be an attraction that takes our history seriously, good and bad. I know some argue that the Confederate Flag was technically that of a foreign country, since the South seceded. But those southerners were American’s before the war and Americans once again following the war. It is without a doubt part of the fabric of American History.”
But Pamela Wester, a university professor from Amsterdam, NY disagrees. She says “I’m glad its gone! It’s offensive! It’s disgusting! It has no business being part of an historical presentation. We can’t progress as an enlightened people until we have completely erased the darker moments of our past. Absolutely no good can come from teaching our children about it!”
And it may not end there. Just before we began our broadcast, several park guests tweeted us to report that in the American Adventure presentation, the “Two Brothers” segment, a touching tribute to how the Civil War tore families apart, has been replaced with a tribute to the two brothers, Walt and Roy Disney. In fact, the lyrics to that iconic song have reportedly been changed to:
Two Brothers named Disney,
Wow. Hmmm. Sometimes its a good thing we don’t have an editorial segment on this show. Moving on.
|As part of the Hub expansion in the Magic Kingdom in the Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Disney has added 4 new towers, styled to look like extensions of Cinderella’s Castle. These free-standing towers arc off of each side of the castle and help frame the forecourt area. But new towers have brought the return of old rumors. For years Disney fan sites have thoroughly debunked the rumor that each of the towers in Cinderella’s castle secretly held a nuclear missile. But with the debut of the new towers, social media is buzzing with that rumor once again.
We sent our field reporter, Erin Dole out to the Magic Kingdom to see if the average guest thought the same thing. However, what she came back with may just be the scoop of the century. Erin joins us now to explain.
ERIN: Hey Parker
PARKER: Hi Erin….so I understand you had an eventful assignment in the park. Tell us what happened.
ERIN: It was eventful Parker…and I am still pretty excited about it. Anyway, like you said, I was there to see what guests thought about the rumor of there being nuclear missiles in the spires of the castle.
ERIN: Well, I was just getting ready to do my first set of interviews when I spotted a small group of men in high-ranking military uniforms closely examining one of the new towers that was just built.
PARKER: Right…the free standing towers outlining the forecourt.
ERIN: Exactly. So sensing a great opportunity…I non-chalantely and surreptitiously sauntered over to them..little by little, step by step….focusing my eyes for the slightest glimpse, straining my ears for the slightest whisper, sharpening my keen powers of …..
PARKER: Ahem…Erin…in the words of Joe Friday…just the facts ma’am.
ERIN: Right. Anyway, I marched right over to them and asked for an interview.
PARKER: Good for you.
ERIN: And it turns out that he was….oh…nevermind…lets just play the interview.
ERIN (from interview): Excuse me sir…General right?
GENERAL: Affirmative. Lt. General to be exact. Lt. Gen Max Power, commander of the United States Army Space and Missile..uh…pardon me….I’m with the Army.
ERIN: Excellent Sir…you are just the person to ask this question of. For many years people have speculated that there are nuclear missiles hidden in the spires of Cinderella’s castle. Is there any truth to that?
GENERAL: Well ma’am. Seems to me that has been dead and debunked for quite some time now.
ERIN: So it’s not true.
GENERAL: True? It’s absolutely absurd! Do you know the kind of thrust a nuclear missile makes when it launches? That combined thrust in all the towers directly connected to the castle would cause a destabilization of the main structure resulting in structural failure of key supports within the castle itself. Which would likely lead to collapse and unacceptable civilian collateral damage. No ma’am. If the US government were ever to hide nuclear missiles in a castle spire, it would have to be an individual free-standing tower…like these new ones…..uh…what I mean to say is that….uh…excuse me…the Secretary of Defense is calling me…..
ERIN (back in studio): So what do you make of that Parker?
PARKER: Well, it certainly seems suspect…..did you follow-up?
ERIN: I’m no rookie Parker. Of course. When I called the United States Army Space and Missile Defense Command and asked to speak to the commander, Lt. General Max Power, I was told that he recently retired and is on a well-deserved two-month long cruise.
PARKER: Interesting. Well thanks Erin for your report.
ERIN: You’re welcome Parker
PARKER: And get back to us if you find out anything more about Lt. General Power’s…uh…Towers.
Back after this.

|PARKER:Welcome back to ENN, the Ears News Network.
Disney loves social media…and social media loves Disney. Some of the earliest podcasts and blogs centered around Disney and the parks. And that relationship dates back even further to the days of usenet groups like RADP, Rec.Arts.Disney.Parks.
Now Disney has announced plans to celebrate the phenomenon of social media. National Social Media day is held annually on June 30th. And while Disney did not have any official observance of that day this year, they did announce big plans to celebrate Social Media Day in 2016.
From June 1st through July 31st of 2016, Disney will host a number of special events celebrating the different forms of this unique medium. But the news that was blowing up the blogosphere is that Disney is creating social media themed overlays to some of the favorite attractions in the Disneyland resort. Those overlays will only be available during that two month celebration.
The announced overlays include The Facebook Land Canal Boats, Alice in Instagram, Great Moments with Mr. Linked In, the Tower of Twitter, Flicker’s Flyers, and Big Tumblr Mountain. Now if you are really old school and nostalgic, you definitely won’t want to miss the centerpiece for the event… MySpace Mountain.
|And finally, Dawn Mallons, a cast member at the Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster in Disney’s Hollywood Studios at the Walt Disney World resort in Orlando sent us a story about a recent guest encounter she had. While monitoring the queue outside the of the show building, Dawn saw an older woman, dressed in an Aeorsmith t-shirt and ripped up jeans, standing outside the door where guests exit the ride and gift shop. The woman, who had a notebook and pen in her hand appeared to be earnestly looking for someone.
Dawn approached her and asked if she had lost a member of her party. The woman said no and explained that she saw Steven Tyler in the control room when she went through the ride and was waiting for him to come out so that she could get an autograph.
Dawn, torn between maintaining the magic of “the show” and helping this guest who was apparently confused about the situation, answered cautiously.
“Ma’am”, she said “I don’t quite know how to tell you this, but Steven Tyler isn’t exactly…here”
The woman smiled, patted Dawn on the arm with a knowing look and said “Its ok dear, most old rockers aren’t, but I want to meet him anyway”.
